Is US trying to annex Greenland?

Is US trying to annex Greenland? Is proposed legislation in Congress?

As of January 2026, President Donald Trump has renewed his efforts to acquire , calling American control of the territory "unacceptable" anything less. This has led to the introduction of several competing pieces of legislation in Congress.
Legislation to Support Acquisition
Multiple bills have been introduced to facilitate the acquisition or annexation of Greenland:
  • Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act (H.R. 7012): Introduced on January 12, 2026, by Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL), this bill authorizes the president to "take whatever steps necessary to annex or acquire Greenland" as a territory and eventually admit it as the 51st U.S. state.
  • Make Greenland Great Again Act (H.R. 361): Initially introduced in early 2025, this bill authorizes the president to enter negotiations with Denmark to purchase Greenland.
  • Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025 (H.R. 1161): Proposed in February 2025, this bill seeks to authorize negotiations to purchase Greenland and rename it "Red, White, and Blueland".
Legislation to Block Acquisition
In response, a bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced measures to prevent a forced takeover of the Danish territory:
  • NATO Unity Protection Act: A bipartisan Senate bill introduced on January 13, 2026, by Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) to prohibit federal funds from being used to blockade, occupy, or annex territory belonging to a NATO member state.
  • Greenland Sovereignty Protection Act: Introduced by Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA) on January 12, 2026, this bill aims to block any federal funding for activities supporting the invasion, purchase, or annexation of Greenland.
Current Situation
  • Administrative Push: The Trump administration has estimated the cost of purchasing Greenland at approximately $700 billion. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet with Danish and Greenlandic officials on January 14, 2026.
  • Opposition: Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and the Danish government have repeatedly stated that Greenland is not for sale and have rejected any talk of annexation as "unacceptable".
  • Public Sentiment: Recent polling shows only 17% of Americans approve of efforts to acquire Greenland, with a majority opposing the use of military force.
