As an Army medic drafted in 1966 I was sent to Korea. I know we had a number of military bases but I never wondered how many. Here is part of my web search...
How many US military bases are in Republic of Korea -- army, navy, air force, other?
The United States military maintains approximately 73 to 80 base sites and installations across the Republic of Korea (ROK). Under a major force consolidation agreement, the vast majority of the roughly 28,500 American troops in the country are grouped into several major core bases. [1, 2, 3, 4]
An extensive list followed but I was more interested in the global total.
That's more than I imagined. How many such bases do we have around the world?
- Overseas Footprint: Roughly 170,000 to 200,000 active-duty U.S. service members are deployed or stationed across roughly 150 different nations. [1]
- Domestic Footprint: The Pentagon manages hundreds of major bases, training ranges, and logistical depots inside the United States, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories.
- Comparison to Other Nations: The U.S. total vastly outpaces other global powers; by comparison, the United Kingdom, Russia, Turkey, and China combined operate a fraction of the overseas footprint (estimated around 150 to 300 foreign bases total). [1]
