İyad el-Baghdadi -- a Thread

 Eight years ago today, this journalist was murdered and dismembered inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by this incompetent idiotic despot.

Today, Saudi Arabia faces one the most serious crises in its modern history. These two stories should be read together.

---> A thread...

Human rights are important, but this is about more than human rights. It's about how systems fail. When disagreeing with the ruler becomes dangerous, idiotic ideas don't get filtered out. The idiot in power can waste trillions of dollars - and years the country cannot get back.

Take Vision 2030. Strip away all the PR and pomp and spectacle, and its core was an economic promise: Saudi Arabia can, within a few years, become no longer reliant on oil. It can become a post-oil regional power. It's 8 years later. Look where we are now.

Instead he wasted billions on idiotic giga-projects that eventually had to face reality. The Line. The Mukaab. Even his LIV Golf venture just filed for bankruptcy. What does Saudi Arabia get to show for it? It's still dependent on oil, and its oil routes are being squeezed.

And then there's Yemen. MBS entered the regional stage as defense minister in 2015, and waging war on Yemen was his personal project to establish his reputation as "the prince of decisiveness". And now the Houthis are stronger than ever are in control of Bab Al Mandab.

The idiot's entire project was to sideline all other voices in Saudi Arabia (and the region) because only he can fix everything. Jamal wasn't perfect. Nobody is perfect. But countries need to have enough independent voices who can look at the ruler and say: "This isn't working".

The idiot wanted to own Saudi Arabia's transformation. He wanted all the authority, all the decision, all the applause, all the credit. Well, now he owns all the consequences. What a fucking disaster.

Saudi Arabia is full of brilliant people. It did not, and does not, lack people capable of imagining a future. What it lacks is a system willing to let them have a chance, without having to kiss the idiot's fat ass or call the bloodthirsty idiot a genius.

It didn't have to end this way. Rest in peace, Jamal.
