When Jesus uttered the words "Put away your sword," he was being arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane immediately following the betrayal by his disciple, Judas Iscariot. [1, 2]
The Sequence of Events
- The Betrayal: Judas arrived at the garden accompanied by an armed crowd sent by the chief priests and elders. Judas identified Jesus by greeting him with a kiss. [1]
- The Arrest: As the mob moved in to seize Jesus, the disciples panicked. [1, 2]
- The Strike: Attempting to defend Jesus, one disciple pulled out a sword and struck Malchus, the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The Gospel of John identifies this sword-wielding disciple as Simon Peter. [1, 2, 3]
- The Rebuke: Jesus immediately stopped the violence. According to the Gospel of Matthew on Bible Gateway, Jesus rebuked Peter, telling him, "Put away your sword... those who use the sword will die by the sword". [1, 2]
Why Jesus Stopped the Fight
Jesus gave two primary reasons for demanding peace in that moment. First, he explained that he was not a helpless victim and could have easily called upon his Father for "twelve legions of angels" if protection were his goal. Second, he emphasized that the arrest had to happen so that the ancient prophecies regarding his suffering and crucifixion could be fulfilled.
